The Nest is a popular internet controlled thermostat that gives you full control over your central heating. Unlike other thermostats on the market the Nest allows you to change your settings using the power of the internet and their innovative Nest app. It's packed full of additional intuitive features too. Click here to jump to the features section of this article.

As a universal heating control, the Nest is very easy to fit although does require the expertise of a qualified heating engineer or electrician as installations do differ depending on the setup of your existing central heating system & thermostat.

WHAT'S IN THE NEST THERMOSTAT BOX?

When you purchase a Nest thermostat from Element 3 you will receive the following:

  • 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat with USB Cable & Plug

  • Heat Link

  • Screws

  • Welcome Guide

  • Installation Guide

  • Trim Kit

The Nest thermostat can either be installed as part of a retrofit installation, acting as a direct replacement for an existing wired thermostat, or can be fitted in as an entirely new wireless device.  In both cases the Nest thermostat needs to be connected to an electricity supply.

The Nest itself offers a range of different features that make it incredibility attractive to users, especially those who like their gadgets. That's not to say that you should be deterred in any way if you are not so technically minded, as the Nest is a "learning" thermostat that can adjust its performance to align with the way you use it.

With an incredibly intuitive menu display system and lots of automated features built-into the device to boost performance and efficiency, our customers often feedback on how easy the Nest is to use and take a lot of delight in telling us about their favorite features.

The main selling point of the Nest is of course the fact that you have the power to turn your heating on or off remotely or change your temperature settings on the fly when you're out of the house. To do this all you need is access to the internet - you can then use the Nest app on compatible Android or IoS phones or tablets to make your changes. You'll never be cold again if you return from work early and can save money if you forget to turn the heating off!

MAIN FEATURES:

  • Internet Control:
Working late and want to delay when your heating comes on? Coming home from holiday early and want to switch your heating on in time for your arrival? Is it snowing outside and you want to up your normal temperature setting? You can now manage all of your heating settings remotely using the wonders of the internet. The Nest can be controlled on mobiles, tablets and PCs and a Nest app is available on Android and Apple devices. It's easy! The 3rd Gen Nest also allows you to control your hot water tank, something the previous model couldn't do.

  • Innovative Learning technology :
The Nest is designed with efficiency in mind and within a week will adapt to the way you use it. For example, if you consistently turn your heating on when you get home from work at 6pm and then crank the heating up again at 9pm, the Nest will intuitively pick this up within a week, adapting your schedule to meet your needs. If you need to override these settings for any reason this can be done using the stylish dial interface on the front of the Nest of through a mobile or desktop device.

  • Motion sensors:
The Nest thermostat's new and improved FarSight sensors allow the device to pick up when there is activity within the room, allowing it to light up and show key information like time , outside weather and indoor temperature.

  • Auto-Away now known as Eco:

There's no point heating the house when no one is in is there, that's why the Nest has been developed with this in mind. The Thermostat can sense when no one is in the property and can adjust its heating settings accordingly, helping to save you money! A pretty handy feature for those constantly on the move with no real everyday routine. The only thing that has changed recently is the name. Eco Temperature can help people save when they’re home too, you just select Eco Temperature on the thermostat or in the Nest app.

  • Compatibility:
The Nest is Universally compatible with most heating systems including Combi and condensing boilers, System and heat only boilers, Hydronic underfloor systems, Air source and ground source heat pumps (heating only), Zoned systems (one Nest Thermostat per zone), Switched live systems and Low-voltage (dry contact) systems. This gives customers enormous flexibility, helping to ensure that the Nest is one of the UK's most accessible smart thermostats.

  • Sharp & Crisp Visuals
The 3rd Generation Nest has a new and improved screen that makes the information you are looking at even easier to interpret. The Nest display now boasts a 24-bit colour LCD Screen (480 x 480 resolution at 229 pixels per inch). The 2nd Gen Nest display had a black border of 1 inch whereas the 3rd Gen model has an outer border of just 1cm, so although the Nest display unit itself is the same size, you are able to see a lot more information due to the extra screen space that's available.

  • Online Energy Reports:
A month after the Nest is activated homeowners will receive a Nest Energy report, which pinpoints areas that you have saved energy as well as highlighting aspects where there is room for improvement. The Nest app also gives users guidance and advice on how they can conserve energy in their home.

  • Warranty: with a 2 year manufacturer guarantee, you can rest assured that your Nest will continue to work problem free.

INSTALLATION

The Nest works as part of a semi wired installation.

The Nest Heat Link, which performs the vital job of receiving your heating settings from the Nest thermostat display,  will always need to be wired into your boiler.

The Nest thermostat display then runs on rechargeable iON batteries but needs to be powered up by a mains electricity connection. The Nest Thermostat display can therefore be fitted in a couple of ways.

1) Power the Nest Thermostat Display by wiring it to the Heat Link
If replacing an existing wired thermostat you can opt to wire the heat link all the way to the Nest thermostat display.  This allows you to utilise existing wires in your property to power the Nest thermostat display.

Note: This connection is for power purposes only. The 2 devices do not have to be connected to share information, as the Heat Link and the Nest Thermostat display pass information wirelessly using the internet.

The diagram below outlines the type of setup involved:

2) Power the Nest Thermostat Display by connecting it to a main electrical supply (wire or plug in)
If you do not have an existing wired thermostat, want to move your thermostat to another part of the house or are introducing the Nest as your properties first thermostat, then you can do so using installation method 2.

Instead of powering the Nest thermostat display using a wired connection directly from the Heat link  (as in option 1), you can opt to power the Nest thermostat by connecting it to your main electricity supply.

You can either:

a) wire it in direct to an electrical supply
OR
b) plug the Nest thermostat into the wall like a standard appliance (probably the most popular option).

The thermostat itself can either be fixed to the wall or if you want to keep your Nest upright on a flat surface like a shelf or mantelpiece then you can choose to invest in the Nest thermostat stand (to be purchased separately), which will keep the thermostat in a safe & upright position. See below image for further information:

Installation is fairly straight forward, but we always advise that you consult a qualified fitter prior to purchase to establish if the Nest is suitable for your installation.

NEST APP FEATURES & COMPATIBILITY

Nest's easy to use application makes it simple to create a heating schedule in which you can stipulate when your heating comes on and off each day and to what temperature it operates at.

The Nest app also lets you monitor energy usage and provides extreme weather alerts to bring your attention to anything out of the ordinary so that you can adjust your settings or schedule according (this can useful in helping to prevent your pipes from freezing or keeping your pets warm in the event of unexpected freezing weather conditions).

Compatibility:
The 3rd Generation Nest is compatible with the app on phones or tablets with a basic spec of iOs 8 (or later) for Apple devices and Android 4 (or later) for Android devices.

Whatever your requirements, we will be sure to provide the best service and aftercare if required.
